Abstract
The protective effects of tartary buckwheat and common Korean buckwheat cultivars, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil, against oxidative stress and gastric cancer were evaluated. The treatment of the methanol extract from tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil showed over 80% scavenging effect against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl at 250 ¥ìg/ml. In addition, all buckwheats showed over 80% ¤ýOH scavenging activity even at low concentration of 50 ¥ìg/ml. In order to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil, we employed nitric oxide (NO) induced cellular inflammatory system using RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The results showed that tartary buckwheat, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil inhibited NO production generated by both exotoxin of sodium nitroprusside and endotoxin of lipopolysaccharide & interferon-gamma. Morever, tartary buckwheat and daesan-maemil showed the strong antimicrobial activity (clear zone £¾14 mm) against Helicobacter pylori. Yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil also inhibited the growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells by up to 70% at concentration of 1,000 ¥ìg/ml. The present results indicate that buckwheats showed protective effects against oxidative stress and gastric cancer.
